184 tools, one ledger — the MCP surface census, 2026-08-29

We measure our MCP tool surface by machine now, and we're putting the number on this log every time it moves — not a round figure we like the sound of, whatever the census script actually counts.

Where the surface stands now: 195 registered tools (196 on the wire, 118 write-capable across 72 scope groups), counted at commit 4fb20da4 on 2026-09-07 by scripts/tool-inventory.mjs --json. The numbers in this post are the ones it was published with and are left as they were.

The count, as of 2026-08-29

184 tools are registered on the public MCP surface, and all 184 resolve to a real, working endpoint — no dead rows, and nothing "coming soon" counted as done. 113 of those are write-capable; 71 are read-only, across 67 distinct permission scope groups.

A connected AI client's own tools/list call sees a slightly different number: 185. That's the 184 reachable rows plus one gateway meta-tool that sits outside the registry itself — the hard ceiling any public connector can ever be shown. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions, and we'd rather publish both than pick whichever one sounds better.

Why we bother with this

Every tool count we've published — 58, then 171, then the 184 of this census — came from the same machine-run census script, never a hand tally. If a number here is wrong, that's a bug in the census, not a decision to round up.

What's next

The payables and receivables suites currently in build go through the same release gauntlet before they get counted. This number changes only when the census does.
